Using links

This website consists of a number of 'pages' that are connected by 'links'.   Links may also connect with different parts of the current page, or with pages on other web sites.

A link to a page that you have not yet visited looks like this: help, and once you have visited the page it changes colour to look like this: help.  You can, of course, visit any page as often as you like.

To move from one page to another you move the mouse pointer over a link, and click the left mouse button.  You will notice that the mouse pointer changes shape ( probably from an arrow  to a pointing hand ) as it moves over the link: this tells you that the link is active and you can click to follow it.

Every page on this site has a link to the 'home' or first page at the top, and a set of links to other pages at the bottom.

Your browser will also have a 'Back' button that will take you back to the last page you visited.  Most browsers will allow you to go back page by page almost indefinitely, and will then let you use a 'Forward' button to return, again page by page.

Try this:  click here to go to the bottom of this page.

External links

Some pages have external links that take you to other websites.  It is possible that an external site may have a link back to this site, but generally the only way back is to use your browser's 'Back' button.  You can, of course, always start at the beginning again by directing your browser to www.preparingforpeace.org

This is an example of an external link.  If you click here you will go to the Britain Yearly Meeting Quaker website.

Moving up and down a page

Web pages are not fixed in size like a piece of paper: the width will be resized to fit your screen, and the length may be much longer than you expect.   This page is itself an example of a 'long' page.

There are several ways to move up and down the page:

Keyboard:  use the arrow keys, or Page UP and Page Down keys.

Mouse with a wheel: Click anywhere on the page to select it, then scroll up and down with the mouse wheel.

Any Mouse:  Click on the small arrows at the right-hand margin of the page, or drag the vertical bar on the right-hand margin.  To drag you first move the mouse pointer over the bar, then hold down the left mouse button while you move the mouse up and down: the bar will 'drag' with the mouse movement.

Printing pages

If you have a printer connected to your computer you can easily print copies of any page on this site.  One of the reasons for keeping to a simple textual site design without any fancy graphics is to make the printing process as simple as possible.

Different browsers vary slightly here: one of the following methods will work:

  1. Select the 'File' menu at the top left of your browser screen, then select 'Print'.
  2. Click the right mouse button anywhere on the page you wish to print, then select 'Print'  from the menu that appears.

Some browsers also have a 'print preview' button that lets you see what the printed output will look like before you send it to the printer.

Saving pages

If your computer has either a hard disk or a floppy disk drive you can easily save any page from this site.

Different browsers vary slightly here: one of the following methods will work:

  1. Select the 'File' menu at the top left of your browser screen, then select 'Save as'.
  2. Click the right mouse button anywhere on the page you wish to print, then select 'Save as'  from the menu that appears.

Saving text

As well as saving entire pages, you can easily copy blocks of text from these pages and paste them into other documents on your computer.

Select the text you require by dragging the mouse pointer over it ( hold down the left mouse button while moving the pointer over the text block ).

To select ALL the text on a page click on the 'Edit' menu and then select 'Select all'.

When you have the text you require highlighted, click on the 'Edit' menu and select 'Copy'.

To past the copied text into another document:

Open the document.  Position the mouse pointer at the position to insert the text.  Click on the 'Edit' menu and select 'Paste'.
